REFLECTION

Experience

Taking a journey into the world of typography for 14 weeks without any preconceptions has proved to be transformative. I had gone into class in Week 1 thinking that typography was relegated to a world of fonts alone, only to discover how much more there was and how little I actually knew. I started out with a very simplistic view of typography. In the beginning of the week, the complexity behind both sides was exposed. However, throughout the following week, I discovered the true depth of typography. Kerning, tracking and the complexities of type hierarchy showed just how detailed it is. Furthermore, pen tip experimentation and letter dissection was an eye-opener. Understanding the letterforms by touching them by hand and then identifying what is meant by the appropriate use of a pen came to me like an earthquake. Typography wasn't only about picking fonts, it was the meticulous art of designing letters. The surprises and discoveries I have made during these 14 weeks are not only adding to my understanding, but they've also given me knowledge of what a complex and rich world typography is.

Observations
Typography is also an art and requires a deep understanding of letterforms, strokes, and the subtle craft of handling pen and ink. My first misconception about the world of typography it's mostly a matter of fonts evaporating in an instant. I came to realize that typography is more than just skin deep. This includes an observant eye for the strokes that give each letter shape. As I learned the inside story of letterforms, I discovered the unforeseen complexity of typography. It wasn't only a matter of picking a font from a list. You had to know the anatomy of each letter. This revelation that how to hold a pen is an art in itself brought another layer of complexity that I hadn't foreseen. Each stroke, each curve became an intentional action requiring care and precision. These 14 weeks have been a turnaround. My initial assumptions have been challenged, and my eyes opened to the breadth of the typographic world. It became a journey of exploration and with each discovery of a new practice. The closer I get to understanding strokes, letterforms and penmanship techniques, the deeper my respect for the complexities that make typography a fascinating and difficult art form.

Findings
I found out that creating fonts is not just a technical matter, it is also a matter of personal taste, creativity and the meaning that you want to express. The overall conclusion is a new understanding of the artistic richness of typography. More particularly, this is not just the practical side of design, it is an art that must be expressed skillfully and accurately.
