4. Final Reflection
- What have I learnt in this module?
I can't help but to reflect on my experience learning this module during my foundation in college days after knowing having to retake design principles again for degree. I was quite worried thinking having to go through the same process as there was a lot of hands on projects that defined our learning process back then. We'll have to bring our projects to class and physically presenting them to our lectuerers for feedback and having to change or improved our projects after each feedbacks which is tiring and exhausting. However, this time I found myself more relax and chill throughout this whole 7 weeks as we will just have to describe and analyze a certain artwork that we have chosen based on our USNDG goal and design our own design for final task. This module helped me to understand even more deeply on each design principles and it is up to your creativity on how you want to project them into a artwork. It also helps me to understand on how deeply analyze and describe a picture. I found myself constantly challenged to think outside the box and approach design from new perspective.
- What did I enjoy the most?
One of the most comforting aspects of presenting my work in class to Miss Jinchi was the genuine sense of supports and encouragement where I felt at ease sharing mt creations, knowing That I would receive thoughtful feedback and constructive criticism. Each time when I am receiving her feedback , I found myself free from the usual nervousness and nerves that often accompany me when I was receiving feedback from other lecturer. What I appreciated most about Miss Jinchi was her honesty and authenticity in providing feedback. She didn't hesitate to offer her genuine thoughts and opinion about my work, whether it was praise for a certain elements for my work or suggestion for areads for improvements. Futhermore, her feedback was always delivered with kindness, never undermining my efforts but rather guiding me towards growth and improvement. Not only that, Miss Jinchi's feedback offer tons of new perspective on my work as well. she helped me to see my work in a new light, uncovering hidden layers of meaning and potential that I didn't realized.
- What did I not enjoy the most?
Having to constantly think and having pressure to improve and refine our work was definitely something I did not enjoy the most. Whether it's describing or analyze the design principle in an image and having to think as well on how to put them into words to create a short paragraph or designing a artwork for our final task which can be both mentally taxing and creatively demanding. In my opinion, this is the most challenging aspects of being a design student as this subject is so subjective. Unlike subjects with clear-cut answers, design is inherently subjective with no definite right or wrong answers. I found myself constantly grappling with the challenges of translting my creativity vision into something that both resonates with my lecturer and myself. Final task was the most difficult compare to task 1 and task 2, from choosing the right colours and textures to balancing form and function, every decision we make has a ripple effect on the final outcome and the overall look of our artwork.
- What have I learnt about myself through this module?
The most unexpected and rewarding experiences in this module was the realization that I had the capacity to create a artwork inspired by the USNDG goal purely from my imagination. At first I always question myself on How could i possibly translate such a complex and globally significant issues into a visual representation solely through my own creativity? But as I allow myself to delved deeper into this module and let my imagination to lead me, I discovered a new side of me which is a newfound sense of empowerment and creativity within myself. Futhermore, I found myself fully immersed in the creative process, exploring different visual elements, experiments with colours and textures and make a final decision from there. I was met with satisfaction and was lowkey proud of myself on completing this module knowing that I've completed another sem.
- What has changed and what has not in my learning journey?
The noticeable changes in my learning journey is the shift in focus from hands-on projects to more analytical exercises. In my college days, the emphasis of design principle was primarily on practical projects and collaborative group work, whereas now in degree, there's been a greater emphasis on describing the design principle in a more analytical manner. While of course both has its on set of challenges, it has also provided me with an opportunity to deepen my understanding of design principles. Moreover, I've noticed a shift in my mindset towards failure and experimentation. Back then, failures and feedback were often met with frustration and disappointment. But now, I've learned to embrace failure and feedback as a natural part of the creative process and to see it as am opportunity for growth and learning.
- What could be improved in this module?
Showing real life examples and relating them to a specific design principles can significantly enhance the understanding and retention of concepts, particularly for students who learn better from visual representation and practical applications. By showing real-life examples, lecturer can provide demonstrations of how design principles manifest in the world around us. Maybe a field trip to the art gallery would help us even more as art galleries typically showcase a wide range of artworks spanning various styles, genres and time periods. Exposing students to this diversity of artistic expressions allows them to see how design principles are applied across different contexts and mediums. Moreover, real-life examples provide opportunities for students to engage in active learning and critical thinking which is great for their future too when they come out into the industry.
