REFLECTION

Experience

My experience with interactive design has been equal parts exciting and difficult. Given that I can actually pull something that works, the sense of fulfillment is huge and pushes me even further. Still, with a steep learning curve, feeling moments of frustration because it doesn't go by your plan is recurrent. It is very time-consuming and frustrating to rub out errors and find the place where one messed up. Each small success builds my confidence, but I am acutely aware of how much more there is to master. Here, while preparing for advanced interactive design next sem, I hope to be able to build on these experiences and find ways to make the learning process more manageable and enjoyable.

Observations

However it does get quite interesting if you have a more or less clear sense of the basics, that is, interactive design through coding. Whereas for me, despite its potential to be fun and creative, it still remains a very challenging field in my head. I find myself still pulling on my hair through so much stuff and realizing that there's so much to learn at the end. The thought of doing advanced interactive design next semester brings shivers down my spine. Though highly interesting, this subject has been a heavy emotional burden throughout my learning process. Making these interactive elements is enjoyable, but mastering the necessary skills is sometimes overwhelmingly complicated and frustratingly difficult.

Findings

From what I have learned, I now know that interactive design is very engaging and fun. Moreover, there is intensity during the learning process—it somewhat becomes a source of stress. Debugging and problem-solving are part of the process, and frustrating, but in ways important to learn from and improve upon. Small victories in functional interactive designs keep me satisfied and motivated to learn more. Feeling stressed by going on to the more advanced interactive design topics means that I am not preparing myself better, perhaps needing more foundational learning. It is essential to find ways of handling the stress ascribed to learning interactive design through seeking support, using other resources, or breaking tasks down into smaller bits.
