WEEK 1: INTRODUCTION TO DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY & IMAGING

fig 1.0. Lecture Slides Week 1

From this lecture slide, I understood...

Why do we need to learn Photoshop?

- Understanding Photoshop is necessary for individuals who work in the fields of visual style, website design, or user experience design. This implies that these professionals need to be proficient in using Photoshop to excel in their respective roles.

- It is also equally important for individuals working in hands-on marketing functions to learn Photoshop. This suggests that even in marketing roles, the knowledge of Photoshop can be beneficial, possibly for tasks related to creating visual content, promotional materials, or enhancing marketing collateral.

1. Express Your Creativity

~ Photoshop is a software or tool that offers a wide range of possibilities and opportunities. The more you explore and learn about the functions of Photoshop, the better you will understand your own creative abilities and potential and with continued exploration and learning, you will discover new techniques and approaches to enhance and improve your design skills.

2. Create Graphic Design

~ It is capable of producing visually appealing design styles, possibly in the context of graphic design or web design. It also allows users to create website layouts or designs. We can also use the software to design various other items, such as business cards, posters, greeting cards, and more.

3. Restoration Of Old Images

~ It is flexible, providing versatile features and functions. The primary purpose of the software is to help restore old photos and enable users to relive pleasant memories associated with those photos. It mentions specific tools within Photoshop, such as the healing brush, clone stamp, and patch tools. Which is used for retouching and restoring photos, indicating that this software application might have similar functionality.

4. Integrate Graphics With Text Artistically

~ Combine images with messages to achieve the desired effect in graphic design. Photoshop is a tool that offers flexibility in blending and matching images with text. Specific visual effects such as embossing, beveling, and drop shadow can be applied to text to make it visually appealing. Images can be enhanced through adjustments in lighting, contrast, and sharpness.

5. Make Use Of Brushes

~ There is a wide variety of brush options available for use. Each brush in the selection offers a distinct or unique effect or style when used in design work if we want to create the visual representation of a large field covered in dense grass. Manually drawing each blade of grass individually is not necessary. To simplify the process of creating the field of grass, you can use a specialized "grass brush" tool within the software. This brush is designed to quickly and easily generate the desired grassy effect, and it can save a significant amount of time.

6. Change Photo Color

~ It allows to addition of effects to photos, which can give them a unique and distinct appearance. It has a wide variety of effects that can be applied to photos to change their appearance.

7. Rectify Mistakes In Photographs

~ An image editing tool's ability to convert photos to black and white, apply various effects, and make a reference to Photoshop's extensive collection of built-in effects.

Before Photoshop: Photograph Manipulation

*Photograph Manipulation With Negative*

~ Combining multiple images on a single negative in photography, which has been intriguing and inspiring photographers since the 1850s. This technique involves manipulating or altering photographs using various methods and techniques to achieve specific desired outcomes. In summary, the sentence touches on the history and purpose of combining images on a negative and the broader concept of photograph manipulation.

The Invention Of Photoshop: Digital Imaging

- The process described is called 'Digital Imaging.' This process involves converting various types of content, including printed text, artwork, and photographs, into digital images. The conversion is achieved through the use of a digital scanner or another type of imaging device.

Practical

We were assigned to find 3 of our favourite graphic design composition works from Pinterest. After that, we have to explain why we chose this as our favourite.

These are my 3 favourite designs that I've found on Pinterest.

Design #1:

Description:

This poster got my attention right away since it displays contrast and visuals as it portrays a religious tableau with a central figure, garbed in a flowing white robe, holding a book in their right hand. I love how this poster evokes a sense of solemnity and enigma, encapsulating a moment shared by each and every tableau.

Design #2:

Description:

This picture reminds me of the movie “Oz: The Great and Powerful”. It portrays a charming scene where a butterfly gracefully soars above a man standing in an antiquated basket. The man is attired in a suit and top hat, suggesting a time period from the past just like in the movie. I adore this picture which captures a sense of nostalgia and whimsy by blending elements of nature, vintage fashion, unique timepieces and vibrant colours.

Design #3:

https://www.pinterest.com/pin/630785491585574647/

Description:

This image portrays a concert or a theatre play featuring an illustration of two cherubs blowing out a shape perhaps trying to illustrate wind or smoke. The man on the below right holds aloft a trident, symbolising potential power or strength, and he is depicted with short, dark hair and attire that resembles armour. On the other side, there’s a detailed close-up image of what appears to be a horse. The overall atmosphere created by this image gives me excitement and anticipation for the upcoming event. I hint at something extraordinary, possibly even daring. There are also elements of mystery that make me question such as ‘Who is he?’, ‘Why cherubs?’ and ‘What are they trying to show us?’.

Reflection

One of the key takeaways from this week was the importance of understanding the technical aspects of digital photography. The significance of concepts such as exposure, composition, and lighting. These fundamentals are the building blocks of creating compelling images, and I am eager to delve deeper into these topics as the course progresses.

I also learned about Photoshop and how is so important for this course, even though I have no experience with Photoshop but I'm sure I will get my hands on it slowly but surely. Furthermore, photography is not just about capturing a moment but also about telling a story or conveying an emotion.
